SmartView – OBIEE 11G Integration: Create Reports from Excel and save in OBIEE catalog

Create an analysis in Excel using SmartView and save in OBIEE catalog

Using SmartView add-in, we can create OBIEE reports from Excel/Word and save in OBIEE catalog. And we can see those reports within OBI Presentation services and can use it for further analysis.

To create an OBIEE report from excel, follow these steps.

To create a new analysis from SmartView,  Open Excel and connect to Oracle BIEE.

Navigate to Oracle BI EE tab.

And then click on “View Designer” button.

The View Designer button will open the Oracle BI EE presentation services Subject Areas. Expand the Subject Areas of your choice and drag the columns of analysis into the areas of report layout.

The SmartView has variety of View types, for demonstration purpose I am using Pivot table.

The Available Report View types are:

In my example I am creating a pivot table, so dragged the Order type in Rows, Order Status in Columns, and Revenue in Measure block. And I am grouping the result set by year, so moved the Per Name Year in Section part.

The wizard will generate a report like this in Spreadsheet:

Now to save this report in OBIEE catalog, click on publish View button.

It will open the OBIEE catalog folders. You can save the report into a folder of your choice that created in OBIEE catalog.

Select the Folder in OBIEE catalog and give a name to report and click save.

Now the report is saved in OBIEE catalog like the analysis we normally save in OBIEE Catalog:

See how the report is rendered in OBIEE Presentation services.

There are many scenarios where we could use this powerful SmartView Add-in for a great flexible usage of OBIEE reports.

<WebMessage name=”kmsgProductPortal”>
<TEXT>Shiva BI Interactive Dashboards</TEXT>

save it and stop and start the Opmn to restart all OBIEE 11G services. Once the services are up, you will see the changed browser title as shown in below picture.

OBIEE 11G – Important Security Considerations (SSL) if using external LoadBalancer

In OBIEE enterprise topology, make sure the external load balancer used should be able to terminate SSL requests at the load balancer and forward traffic to the back-end real servers using the equivalent non-SSL protocol (for example, HTTPS to HTTP).

For security purposes, and because the load balancer terminates SSL requests (Oracle HTTP Server routes the requests as non-SSL to WebLogic Server), after SSL is configured for the load balancer, turn on the WebLogic Plugin Enabled flag for the domain. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Log in to the Administration Console.
2. Click the domain name in the navigation tree on the left.
3. Click the Web Applications tab.
4. In the Change Center, click Lock & Edit.
5. Select WebLogic Plugin Enabled.
6. Click Save, then click Activate Changes.
7. Restart the Administration Server and Managed Server.

Tip: WebLogic Plugin Enabled: Specifies whether or not the proprietary WL-Proxy-Client-IP header should be honored. (This is needed only when WebLogic plugins are configured.)

In additon to above, make sure Oracle HTTP Server (OHS) to add the following SSL directives in each <location> section to the ORACLE_BASE/admin/instance_name/config/OHS/component_name/mod_wl_ohs.conf file:

WLProxySSLPassThrough ON

Tips: Set WLProxySSL parameter to ON to maintain SSL communication between the plug-in and WebLogic Server when the following conditions exist:

An HTTP client request specifies the HTTPS protocol
The request is passed through one or more proxy servers (including the WebLogic Server proxy plug-ins)
The connection between the plug-in and WebLogic Server uses the HTTP protocol
When WLProxySSL is set to ON, the location header returned to the client from WebLogic Server specifies the HTTPS protocol.

Sub Folders/ Nesting Folders in OBIEE 11G Answers

Till in OBIEE we are limited to nest the folders only at 2 levels.  This limitation has been fixed in OBIEE with a nice feature.

To nest the presentation folders, login to OBIEE RPD and look at presentation layer. Here select a presentation table which you want to see as parent folder. Double click on that Presentation Table and now you will see a properties window with multiple tabs.

Among those tabs we can use the Child Presentation Tables tab in the Presentation Table dialog to designate child presentation tables. You designate child presentation tables to give the appearance of nested folders in Answers and BI Composer. You can add multiple layers of nesting using this method.

e.g.: Achieving Nested Folders in Answers

I would like to nest the presentation folders like this.

To structure the Presentation Tables/folders navigate and click on the RPD objects in sequence as shown in below screenshot.

If you did this in online mode, Reload Files and Metadata from presentation server Administration page. Otherwise after successful OBI services restarts you will see the presentation catalog in Subject area like this.

Note that the folders only appear to be nested – they are not actually nested in terms of drill-down, and the qualified names of the objects remain the same. In addition, the Presentation layer in the Administration Tool does not display the nesting; the nesting only appears in Answers and BI Composer. This feature only works for presentation tables, and not for other Presentation layer objects.

When you run a consistency check, the Consistency Check Manager detects any circularity in parent-child presentation table assignment. It also detects and reports project definitions that include child presentation tables without parent presentation tables.

In previous releases, repository developers could achieve one level of nesting by adding a hyphen at the beginning of a presentation table name, or by adding an arrow (->) at the beginning of the presentation table description. This method is now deprecated for this release and will be removed in a future release.

If you previously used hyphens at the beginning of presentation table names or arrows at the beginning of presentation table descriptions to achieve nesting, it is recommended that you run the Upgrade Presentation Foldering utility to convert your metadata to the new structure.
