New Waterfall Chart in OBIEE 11G

Disclaimer: Before reading this post. I would like to make a request to all readers. This feature is not supported by oracle at this version and so please do not go to the oracle support for further information. This was the reason that I have removed this post for sometime. But I have seen so many other bloggers are re blogged my content in their blogs and hence I thought of republishing this. Again, I am not responsible for any issues caused because of this.

OBIEE has a new graph called “waterfall” chart in future versions. A waterfall chart is a special type of floating-column chart. A typical waterfall chart shows how an initial value is increased and decreased by a series of intermediate values, leading to a final value. An invisible column keeps the increases and decreases linked to the heights of the previous columns.

By default this is not visible in our graph list and need to enable manually. To do that, add this tag in your instanceconfig.xml file between <views> element. Save the file and restart the OPMN services.

After successful OBI services startup, Log into OBIEE analytics.

Now create a new analysis and go to results tab. On the results tab, Click on New view ->Graph menu, there you will find this new “Waterfall” chart.

Click on Waterfall chart to create a new view. It has nice features and properties to represent your data.

A quick screenshot of available features and types of data representation:

I created a sample report with Year and Revenue columns using Waterfall chart. You can see how the data is scattered on graph with respect to the data we have in table.

The last bar in the graph represents a value. That will be called as ‘End Balance‘ value in waterfall chart.

This graph definitely open doors to so many thoughts on data representation.  For me, I am seeing an option for Gantt charts now 🙂 .

Thanks,

Shiva
