Install OBIEE 11g on same OBIEE 10g server with new ports configuration

08 Oct

During my (OBIEE) journey I am always being asked by folks to install OBIEE 11g on same OBIEE 10g server. Because they want to test the new brilliant tool (OBIEE 11g) features side by side with his brother (OBIEE 10g).Of course this will slow down your system unless you have (super computerJ) high hardware configurations.

On background OBIEE 11g too will use same port numbers (9703, 9704, 9705, and 9710 etc…) like OBIEE 10g. If we install 11g with default port numbers, it will override the existed components ports and then 10g BI components will throw error and stop working.

Example of error message for this kind of incidents:

[nQSError: 12002] Socket communication error at call=: (Number=10048) only one usage of each socket address (protocol/network address/port) is normally permitted.

So if we want install OBIEE 11g on the existing OBIEE 10g server, we need to configure port during the installation process.

Once we started the OBIEE 11g set up we need to select Enterprise Install or Software only Install that enables to change the port for Oracle Application server, Weblogic and OBIEE.

Below is the quick screenshot for different installation types we choose during 11g installation.

Download the staticports.ini file from here and save this to one of your local drive (Note: due to web limitations I changed the file name as staticports.docx, once you downloaded you should change this to staticports.ini).

Once we selected one installation type from either Enterprise Install or Software only install and click next. Then in the next step it will ask for port configuration. Check Specify Ports using Configuration file and browse Just specify the newly assign port configuration file (staticports.ini which you just downloaded from this post).

This file will configure OBIEE11g with the specified ports in that to avoid coexistence.  Click Next to continue the installation.

–>I am just stopping here because the rest of the process you all know already.

Till next time,

Shiva

I was wondering, it is a way to specified the Node Manager port, so the BI won’t change it to 9556?

By the way, excellent post. Thank you!

    Hi Shiva ,
I have a small question of course its silly one.
We have only one server, already installed obiee11g.
Again they are asking to setup the QA instance by installing second time in this server,
So can we able to install same obiee11g as two instances in a single server?

    Hi,

I am installing OBIEE 11.1.1.3.0 on Windows Server 2003 R2 – Enterprise Edition with System Local Administrator rights. When installation reached to 96% a notepad application instance opened and a warning message appears “The filename, directory name or volume label syntax is incorrect”. When I opened installation log file “C:\Program Files\Oracle\Inventory\logs” then I found follwing message in it:

+[2011-05-26T12:33:11.778+04:30] [OUI] [NOTIFICATION] [] [OUI] [tid: 19] [ecid: 0000J0fEf739Hf^_xTx0iW1DrW4Y00000A,0] Exception occured during spawning :Cannot run program “E:\Middleware\Oracle_BI1\wls10installer\server103_win32.exe”: CreateProcess error=5, Access is denied+

After this point; installation does not proceed further. Please suggest/advise what to do to solve this issue.

    Regards,
    Kamran
