Configurations needed for OBIEE 11g RPD on Windows 64 bit machine

24 Aug

After installing OBIEE11g on windows 64 bit installation, the ODBC System DSN is set with a wrong driver file path on Microsoft Windows x64 with the following details.

Driver=..<MW_HOME>\Oracle_BI1\bifoundation\server\bin\NQSODBC.dll

Actually the installer should set the DSN driver to nqsodbc64.dll, rather the installer sets it to nqsodbc.dll, which does not exist on the disk.

So for this go to registry editor and change the driver to nqsodbc64.dll instead of nqsodbc.dll.

  1. Go to start-> Run -> type regedit
  2. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

->SOFTWARES

->ODBC

->ODBC.INI

-> coreapplication_XXXXXX

In left side window you will see all attributes for this application. In that double click on Driver attribute.It will popup an Edit string window. In that for Value data change the dll file version to NQSODBC64.dll from NQSODBC.dll and Click Ok to save this change.

3.  Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

->SOFTWARES

->ODBC

->ODBCINST.INI

-> Oracle BI Server11g_XXXXXX

i) In left side window you will see all attributes for this application. In that double click on Driver attribute.It will popup an Edit string window. In that for Value data change the dll file version to NQSODBC64.dll from NQSODBC.dll and Click Ok to save this change.

ii) Again In left side window double click on Setup attribute.It will popup an Edit string window. In that for Value data change the dll file version to nqssetup64.dll from nqssetup.dll and Click Ok to save this change.

The DSN driver setting has no functional impact and hence can be ignored.

Thanks,

Shiva

      On 64-bit Operating systems we could not open OBIEE11g client tools.It is a bug in OBIEE11g.
      Oracle will fix this in next release.

      Thanks,
      Shiva

    Hi Shiva,

    I already have the same value for step 3, and so I just change the value in step 2. However, I noticed that everytime I start BI Services, the registry looks like write back to old value (nqsodbc.dll).
    Do you, by chance, know any other solution, i.e. change config file (.ini) rather than registry?

    Thanks for your informative post and thanks for your response.

      Even we change in any config files again the ODBC communication is depends on the dll files used by Operating systems. At the same time you should be the part of Administrators group on windows to change the registry entry .

      Thanks,
      Shiva

    Hi,

    Did you have to do any deviations from the standard Install for OBIEE 11? Like install the JDK seperately, etc?

      This is because You’ve not set up the Excel File in the 64bit version of the ODBC driver (Located in C:\Windows\SysWOW64\odbcad32). It works on the Admin Client because its 32 Bit looking at the 32 bit driver.
      When you load on to the server, It can’t see the driver because it’s looking at the 64bit ODBC. Simple solution re-build the driver with the EXACT same same names and setting in the 32bit version and it should work on both Admin tool and the Server.
